Eden Food for Change is incredibly grateful to the generous Mississauga community who made this October a memorable one.
This year, the Food Bank at Eden Food for Change (EFFC) received an unprecedented 80,387lbs in food donations in October. This is 25,000lbs more than donations made in October 2014.
“It’s completely overwhelming,” says Donna Behmer, Food Bank Manager at EFFC. Food Banks generally expect to receive their largest donations around Thanksgiving and Christmas, but this year’s thanksgiving food drives exceeded any expectations that the organization held.
“This October has been amazing,” says Bill Crawford, Executive Director. “The generosity of this community means that we are able to provide food for everyone who comes through our Food Bank doors, as well providing skills and tools so people can provide for themselves tomorrow.”
EFFC also saw a record number of Fresh Produce Boxes ordered. In fact, in the last week of October more than 520 boxes were ordered showing the need for healthy fruits and vegetables at an affordable price is needed in this community.
The organization also held its 6th annual fundraising event A Taste of Eden in October. Tree of Life Canada was the title sponsor for the event that brought in a record $44,000 for all the programs run at EFFC.
October also saw the last month for the organization’s newest project – the weekly Farmers’ Market of Eden which was held at the Lisgar GO station and was a joint production with the bi-weekly Many Feathers’ Market. Eden’s market experience was made considerably easier with the donation of a storage container by BigSteelBox, who provide moving and storage solutions. The market provided the community with access to local growers and food producers.
Eden Food for Change has been serving hungry families in western Mississauga for 25 years. The organization serves people through its two Food Bank locations, Learning Kitchen and its Fresh Produce Box program and has a vision of Good Food For All!
